Rule of Law at the National and International Levels - UN Conference in September

February 27, 2012 - 12:52pm

In September, the United Nations will convene a high-level meeting on the rule of law – the first event of its kind and the first time, since 2005, that these issues will be discussed by top leaders. The UN General Assembly notes that there is a need to dialog on how best to place national perspectives at the center of rule of law assistance; to support the participation of women in rule of law-related activities; and to continue to provide technical assistance and capacity development within rule of law activities.

Recently, James A. Goldston discussed the three principles outlined by the United Nations Secretary General in his Open Society Foundation blog, noting the tension in determining what rule of law is, yet the importance rule of law plays not only in developing countries, but in more developed countries as well. In concluding, Goldston noted the importance of the September meeting will mean to reiterate commitments to the fundamental principles of rule of law.
